The Duomo, Florence’s Cathedral
The “Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore” is the main church of Florence. “Il Duomo di Firenze”, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Florence Baptistery
The Florence Baptistery, also known as the Baptistery of Saint John, is a religious building which can be found in Piazza del Duomo and Piazza San Giovanni. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was constructed between 1059 and 1128 in the Florentine Romanesque style.
Santa Maria Novella Church
Architecturally, Santa Maria Novella Church is one of the most important Gothic churches in Tuscany. The convent was built between 1279 and 1357 by Dominican friars . The upper part was completed 100 years later in 1470. The church, the adjoining cloister, and chapter house contain a multiplicity of art treasures and funerary monuments.
Church of Santa Croce
The Basilica di Santa Croce is the principal Franciscan church in Florence situated on the Piazza di Santa Croce. It is also the largest Franciscan church in the world. Michelangelo was buried here beneath a monument with allegorical figures of Sculpture, Architecture and Painting, designed by Giorgio Vasari.
Church of San Miniato al Monte
San Miniato al Monte which was built between the 11th and 13th century, has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most scenic churches in Italy. With your back to the front of the church one can enjoy an impressive view of Florence even higher up than the beautiful Piazzale Michelangelo.
Church of San Marco
San Marco is the name of a religious complex in Florence. It comprises a church and a convent. The convent, nowadays is a museum. During the 15th century it was home to two famous Dominicans, the painter Fra Angelico and the preacher Girolamo Savonarola.
San Lorenzo Church & Monumental Complex
Of all the religious buildings in Florence, none is documented earlier than San Lorenzo. The Basilica di San Lorenzo is one of the largest churches of Florence and situated at the centre of the city’s main market district. It is the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family from Cosimo il Vecchio to Cosimo III.
